You may have noticed the #SelfCareDares that I have been posting on my social media, some of you may have even joined in but how many of you actually know why self care is so important? To answer that question we first need to ask ourselves, what is self care?
To me self care is about identifying what your individual needs are and taking steps to meet them, treating yourself as kindly as you would treat others. Essentially, it is care that is provided by you, for you!
All through our lives we are taught that in emergency situations we should care for ourselves and ensure our safety before helping others so why not apply this to every day life. Why not figure out what we want, what we need and what makes us happy before focusing on everyone else because not only will it benefit you but it will also benefit those around you.
So we’ve already touched on the main reason self care is important, it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself but it is also one of the things we tend to forget about. We spend all of our time nurturing and caring for those around us that we find ourselves focusing on family, pets, friends, work and even strangers so much that we don’t find time for ourselves. This can then lead to us becoming worn out, stressed and run down, why? Because we are neglecting our own needs which can ultimately lead to resentment, low self esteem and unhappiness when all we need to do is find a balance between the activities of daily life and activities that bring us some kind of joy, well being or peace. Self care isn’t selfish or greedy, it is just self preservation.
The best thing is, Self care doesn’t even have to be some big thing, it can be as simple as taking 10 minutes out of your day to do something just for you and in a lot of cases it doesn’t have to cost much, or even anything. So go on, read that book you have been dying to get your hands on, have a nice relaxing soak in the bath, whatever it is that will make you happy – in the words of a very famous sports company – Just do it!
Personally I try to spend 30 minutes twice a week focusing on myself, here are a few examples of what is on my self care activity list:
- Sit in the sun
- Take a relaxing bubble bath
- Listen to music
- Play guitar/sing
- Take a walk
- Dance like no one is watching
- Read a book
- Chat with a good friend
- Watch a movie
- Sit in the park and people watch
