As a singer and songwriter who is not signed to a major label or managed by anyone other than myself I know how difficult it can be to grow your brand and get yourself in front of the right people so I thought a good way to start the year with my music based blog would be to introduce you all to some of the less known artists that I know and love in the hopes that you like them as much as I do. So here we have it, my top 10 tracks from (somewhat) Independent Musicians…
Firstly, I would like to give an honourable mention to one of the best up and coming UK bands that I have heard throughout 2017 – Sorry About Shaun (and I am not biased at all due to the fact that one of them is my cousin, lol). I can’t decide which song I like best so here’s a preview of their debut album so you can decide for yourself:
Jay is a local artist that I met through Facebook and after listening to some of his music I was really impressed and excited to buy his EP. The EP didn’t disappoint and this song is actually one of my favourites. I have also have the opportunity to see Jay live at a local open mic night and my gosh the boy is talented, so much so that I actually pitied the act that had to follow him on stage as he got such a great reception.
He is constantly writing and his songs tend to be difficult to define as he takes influence from everywhere but the original I heard live was called Unicorn Queen, written about his ex girlfriend and considering I had never heard it before, both myself and the person I was with were signing along to the chorus by about half way through the song. He also did a Bruce Springsteen cover which was pretty special thanks to his fantastic guitar playing and mesmerising vocals. Definitely one to watch!
I have been listening to these loads at the moment and even touched on them in a previous blog so I am not going to ramble on about them too much. Quite simply, they are a very talented duo consisting of two sister based in America and their sound is very much based in the blues genre. All I can say is, check them out and if you are not a fan of their original music, head over to their youtube and check out some of their covers and you’ll soon change your tune (a particular favourite is ‘Black Betty’ by Ram Jam).
Those of you who are fans of the television show Nashville will most probably recognise this track as it was used in the show for Juliet’s character. Striking Matches in my opinion are one of the best duos around at the moment and I have been following them since 2014, their vocals are fantastic and their musicality is second to none and the energy they have on stage during performances is incredible, it’s easy to understand why I have been to see them pretty much every time they have crossed the pond. The pair draw their influences from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, etc so although they do throw the odd ballad in there, the general tone of their music tends to be a bit of a blues rock relationship.
I have a huge girl crush on Mary which you can read all about here, she is not only an extremely talented singer-songwriter but she also writes poetry and is a huge body positive advocate and the main reason for my learning to actually accept myself warts and all so there will always be a place in my heart for this lovely lady. Although she has had some success in the past her most recent album was funded through Kickstarter and it’s a good one so go have a listen!
You may not recognise the name but if you are a fan of the television program Grey’s Anatomy you will definitely have heard some of her music as she has had a few tracks featured – the most popular one being ‘Breathe, 2am’. Although that is one of my favourite tracks I have really enjoyed watching Anna’s journey about recording her most recent album via her PledgeMusic campaign and wanted to feature one of the songs from that. Anyway, I don’t believe this singer-songwriter needs much more of an introduction so just have a listen and enjoy…
0. Haley Ryan – Guess
I know I said that it was a top 5 but what kind of artist would I be without the odd shameless plug. Obviously, as the name suggests, this is my track and I worked on it with Faroni Music because I wanted to change my sound a little and this is by far my favourite track that I have recorded as it is a little more rocky and sassy. Anyway, I’m not going to talk about this one too much so you might as well just check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.
So there you have it, my guide to what in my opinion is some of the best music out there from independent artists, what tracks would make your top 10?
